How to apply blush according to your face shape

If you’re scared to wear blush because you don’t know how to, you’re missing out. Blush is your friend at any age. If you know how to apply it, blush can enhance the shape of your face while adding a flattering touch of colour. The key is placement, so follow the steps below to blush with beauty.

Before you begin, don’t smile. Makeup is a very serious business. Okay, it’s not that. Smiling pushes your cheeks up. Stop smiling and they slip downward. You don’t want your blush sliding down with them. Smiling all day will also make your face hurt. Relax!

Here's how to work out where your blush should be applied.

For all face shapes: Follow your cheekbone from the hairline down to the apple of the cheek. Work the product in a circular motion using a dome headed blush brush.

Long/heart/square: Using a soft angled powder brush, apply blush in a circular motion to the apple of the cheek. Work it outwards to make the face look wider. You don’t want to take the colour right up the cheekbones in an angular way, because that elongates the face.

Round/square/heart faces: Using a blush or highlighter brush, create a V shape over eyebrow. Work downwards by the hairline and back out under the eye. Don’t bring the colour in any further than the middle of your eyeball. This technique gives a visual lift to the face while adding a beautiful glow.

Round: To carve out your cheekbones, suck your cheeks in and apply blush above the hollow using a dome headed blush brush. Bring it all the way down close to the crease that runs between the corner of your mouth and your nose. Use a clean brush to blend the excess product upwards, all the way to the hairline in a circular motion.

Pro tips:
Always clean up any overspill using a clean powder brush.  Blusher, highlighter and bronzer should blend into one. Avoid any little stripes of colour; this is never a good look.  If in doubt, blend it out!

Baked blush is more pigmented than regular blush. It will last longer and you can adjust the colour intensity to get the look you want. Baked products have a marbled colour that never looks flat or dull.

Don’t be afraid to mix blush colours to get your perfect shade.
